Noriega and Shepik play together with Chris Speed, Trevor Dunn and Jim Black a tribute to Paul Motian. Please see "Paul Motian" on the front page of the web-site htttp://www.winterandwinter.com The death of Paul Motian marks the end of an era. Nothing will remain the way it was. A great irreplaceable protagonist of the jazz world left the stage. The music of Bill Evans, Lennie Tristano, Paul Bley, Masabumi Kikuchi, Keith Jarrett, and Bill Frisell would sound different without his influence. Each note of Paul Motian had its destiny and meaning. He leaded events with an invisible hand like a wizard. Sometimes he gave impulses without even touching a cymbal or drum. He turned his drums set into a symphonic instrument which was never heart before. With a sure knack, he chose for his groups as yet almost unknown musicians, just as Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano, Brad Shepik, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Potter or Thomas Morgan once were. Motian knew that all these musicians have held hidden treasures, and through his works these hidden music gems were highlighted. Paul Motian never pushed his way into the foreground, he remained a humble man dedicated to his works and music. — Mariko Takahashi and Stefan Winter (Winter&Winter) 1/6 Friday (MJJ) 8 pm Exile Shanghai/Homage to Max Mohr Shelley Hirsch (music, performance) Simone Fuerbringer, Nicolas Humbert (visuals) [Director of the film »Wolfsgrub«] Frederick Reuss (readings) [Author of the novel »Mohr«] The directors Simone Fuerbringer and Nicolas Humbert will be present. 10 pm Refuge in Shanghai Film: “Port Of Last Resort” by Joan Grossman and Paul Rosdy, soundtrack by John Zorn.
