TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS 9/3 Tuesday (HM) 8 pm Quintet with Larry Ochs, Nate Wooley, Ken Filano, Pascal Niggenkemper, Harris Eisenstadt Larry Ochs (saxes) Nate Wooley (trumpet) Ken Filano, Pascal Niggenkemper (bass) Harris Eisenstadt (percussion) Performing extended compositions by Ochs for this quintet! 10 pm Larry Ochs – Gerald Cleaver Duo Gerald Cleaver (drums, percussion) Larry Ochs (saxes) A first-time duet with Mr. Cleaver; the classic horn-drum combination. Ochs does have an ongoing duo with drummer Donald Robinson, as well as his long time Larry Ochs Sax & Drumming Core, originally a trio of Ochs, Robinson and Scott Amendola. Been suggesting this to Gerald for some years now, but when I heard his new CD “Black Host,” I was inspired to make sure this happened. 9/4 Wednesday (RJP) 8 pm Larry Ochs - Eliot Humberto Kavee - Ikue Mori Trio Ikue Mori (electronics) Eliot Humberto Kavee (drums, percussion) Larry Ochs (saxes) Ikue is a long-time member of Rova’s Electric Ascension Project, and we’ve known each other both musically and personally for decades. Elliot spent some years in the Bay Area, but this will be our first time onstage together. 10 pm Quintet with Larry Ochs, Nate Wooley, Ken Filano, Pascal Niggenkemper, Harris Eisenstadt Larry Ochs (saxes) Nate Wooley (trumpet) Ken Filano, Pascal Niggenkemper (bass) Harris Eisenstadt (percussion) Performing extended compositions by Ochs for this quintet. 9/5 Thursday (SK) 8 pm Ochs-Masaoka Duo Larry Ochs (saxes) Miya Masaoka (koto, electronics) Ochs and Masaoka have performed together since the early 1990s as Miya is a San Francisco native. Their trio with Fred Frith, Maybe Monday, performed and recorded from 1998–2006. This duo performed in Paris for the first time in years last April and in Oakland in June. We are also 2 of the 5 members of the very cool East West Collective that play Vision Festival in June. 10 pm Ochs-Masaoka-Drury Trio Andrew Drury (percussion) Larry Ochs (saxes) Miya Masaoka (koto, electronics) I heard Drury live last year for the first time, and I love his 2003 CD “A Momentary Lapse.” When Miya mentioned that she and Andrew had been talking about hooking up, the trio seemed like a great idea. 9/6 Friday (MJC) 8 and 10 pm Best for Brows: Larry Ochs - Ches Smith - Devin Hoff Trio Larry Ochs (saxes) Ches Smith (percussion) Devin Hoff (bass) Smith and Hoff are so good as a duo (check out any CD by “Good for Cows”) that I feel honored to be allowed to jump in, but then we did try it out In the Bay Area when they were both living there, and the excellent Darren Johnston quintet CD from some years back “Reasons for Moving” includes the three of us (plus Frith and Johnston). 9/7 Saturday (RK) 8 pm Ochs-Shelton Quartet Aram Shelton (alto sax) Mark Dresser (bass) Kjell Nordesen (drums) Larry Ochs (saxes) This is a West Coast quartet. Mark Dresser is the newest member simply because it’s been hard to catch him in San Francisco when he’s usually very busy down at UCSD in San Diego. A recording session and concerts by the quartet out here in July has the music focused! Great writing for the band by Shelton (especially) and Ochs. Kjell Nordesen was born in Sweden but has been a West Coast resident for close to a decade. He works with all three of the other players in this band in other contexts. 10 pm Jones Jones Vladimir Tarasov (percussion) Mark Dresser (bass) Larry Ochs (saxes) Ochs and Tarasov met and recorded together when Rova first toured the former USSR in 1983. He was already a legend in the USSR as one of the players in the original Ganelin Trio, as important a band there for “avant-garde” listeners in the ’60s and ’70s as the Art Ensemble of Chicago was here. Dresser met him not long after that, and they performed together intermittently in ensuing years. This trio first performed in the Bay Area in 2008, with tours to Europe in 2009 and 2010. First East Coast performances tonight and tomorrow. 9/8 Sunday (JR) 8 pm Jones Jones Vladimir Tarasov (percussion) Mark Dresser (bass) Larry Ochs (saxes) Ochs and Tarasov met and recorded together when Rova first toured the former USSR in 1983.
