7/11 Wednesday (JI)
8 pm
Arthur Doyle and his New Quiet Screamers
featuring the members of NYMPH
The magic free-soul mojo man Arthur Doyle is hardly alone in his position as a marginal jazz figure. In an art form known for its many trials and tribulations (both artistic and financial), Doyle hasn’t made his situation any easier by attempting to carve a singular path along the music’s outskirts. Performing in a style he calls “free jazz soul,”” Doyle ecstatically combines the liberated freedom flights of the avant-garde with the gritty, gut-wrenching emotion of gospel and R&B.

He will be joined tonight by a cooperative of his sonic and attitudinal acolytes, including the Louisiana-bred curator and sound artist Robert Peterson and members of the Brooklyn-based avant-psych band NYMPH. Peterson began this process in Summer of 2010 when he contacted Doyle to perform at a NYMPH show in Doyle’s hometown of Birmingham; the show climaxed in a joyous collaboration of all three entities, and their personal and performative connection has grown, organically and forward-moving, since. Peterson will be augmenting Doyle’s vocals and saxophone with ambient, mesmeric loops chopped from real-time source-recordings made amid the performance. Edifying Doyle’s inflammatory, improvisational alto sax and trademark “voice-o-phone” with a polyrhythmic and textural support-system, NYMPH will warp its singular cavalcade of exuberant free rock into a tonally more subdued and sensitive approach akin to their exploratory, loving performances of pieces by Don Cherry, Sonny Sharrock and Pharoah Sanders. As has become characteristic since the band’s recent expansion to an eight-piece, NYMPH will be enriching it’s guitar-centric attack with baritone sax, clarinet, trumpet, tape-delayed drones and a shuddering jungle of hand percussion sounds. What will transpire is a true genre-bending set of risk-taking improv and ebullient sonic agglomeration.

10 pm
Man Forever
John Colpitts, Brian Chase, Ryan Sawyer (drums) Sarah Richardson (organ) Shahin Motia (guitar) Richard Hoffman (bass)
Drummer, composer and improviser John Colpitts aka Kid Millions founded Man Forever in 2010 as a vehicle for his more experimental compositional ideas. Since the founding of the ensemble Colpitts has released three albums and toured throughout the US and Europe. Man Forever compositions are vehicles through which the performer will discover and contemplate the limits of his or her physical and conscious selves. The experience of performing and hearing these compositions will be similar in their contradictions; they are at once relentless and meditative. Performers with the group have included Brian Chase, Richard Hoffman, Ryan Sawyer, James McNew, SR Palm, Chris Baio, Shahin Motia, and Greg Fox.

7/12 Thursday (KR)
8 pm
Spanish Donkey
Joe Morris (guitar) Jamie Saft (MiniMoog, Roland Jupiter 6) Mike Pride (drums, percussion, nose whistle)
Any of the artists that form The Spanish Donkey (Jamie Saft, Joe Morris, Mike Pride) could create dictionaries of superlatives with praise their work has garnered. But as a cohesive unit, they surge forward into a new thesaurus, as a dream trampling through the woods on the edges of evening. Joe Morris’ melodic improv guitar lines sketching out space where Jamie Saft’s keyboards color in chromatic aberration nudged and prodded by Mike Pride’s outside of time drumming. Three artists who have made careers of developing new sonic spaces, have formed a new place of exploration and imagination. It’s the re-history of 21st century avant-jazz.

Henry Grimes and Geri Allen
Henry Grimes (upright bass, violin, poetry) Geri Allen
In the late ’50s through the ’60s, after attending Juilliard, HENRY GRIMES played acoustic bass with many master jazz musicians of that era, including Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Sunny Murray, Sonny Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, and McCoy Tyner. Sadly, a trip to the West Coast to work with Al Jarreau and Jon Hendricks went awry, leaving Henry in downtown L.A. at the end of the ’60s with a broken bass he couldn't pay to repair, so he sold it for a small sum and faded away from the music world. Without a bass, a vehicle, or a telephone, he survived by doing manual labor and redirected his creative powers into writing poetry. He was discovered there by a Georgia social worker and fan in 2002 and was given a bass by William Parker. Since then, Henry Grimes has played nearly 500 concerts (including many festivals), touring in 28 countries throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, playing and recording with many of this era's music heroes, such as Rashied Ali, Marshall Allen, Fred Anderson, Marilyn Crispell, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Dixon, Edward “Kidd” Jordan, Roscoe Mitchell, David Murray, Zim Ngqawana, William Parker, Marc Ribot, Wadada Leo Smith, Cecil Taylor (again) — and now Geri Allen. http://www.henrygrimes.com.
