AFUCHE: Rueben Sindo Acosta (keyboard, drum, vocals) Zach Ryalls (guitar) Andrew Carrico (baritone sax) Denny Tek (bass) Ian Chang (drums)
Upsilon Acrux is an instrumental quintet (dual guitars, dual drums). Their music is generally very intense, loud, hard-hitting and unbelivably virtuosic. Upsilon Acrux's music is demanding on many levels, but mostly it demands that you listen to it a number of times because only after you've gotten familiar with it can you get past the sheer complexity and onslaught of it all and hear the amazing musicality of what they are doing. This combination of blazingly fast, interwoven musical lines delivered at blinding speed mixed with their unique melodic sense makes Upsilon's music instantly recognizable. They are one of the most creative and original of the shockingly large number of great, post-punk, avant-garde rock bands today.

Based out of Brooklyn, NY and creating a group sound that is truly their own, Afuche is a band that needs to be heard by lovers of adventurous, modern progressive music! Formed in 2008, they have been evolving their sound by writing, performing, and touring non-stop – it was at one of their many shows where we found them and watched their continued development with keen interest. The fearless intensity and the strong group dynamic in the playing — extremely notable in such a young band — pours through the speakers; their sound is catchy and mesmerizing and will have you moving in ways you never thought possible.

Carlo De Rosa’s Cross-Fade
Carlo De Rosa (bass) Mark Shim (sax) Enrique Haneine (piano) Tommy Crane
(drums)
Proficient, creative, a first-call, in-demand bassist, Carlo De Rosa has earned a reputation of very high standards. As a composer and band-leader of the quartet Cross-Fade, he also has very high standards, but outside of New York City clubs, this work has not been widely recognized. Brain Dance is set to remedy that situation! The compositions give the players malleable material with which to work with; there’s plenty of thematic material, but also plenty of room for them to add their individuality. The end result is greater than even the sum of their musical talents and the compositions. The music constantly moves between the modern, avant-garde and electric jazz worlds, never standing still, but taking the most interesting and attractive elements of these worlds and combining them into a new whole.

10 pm
Dead Cat Bounce
Matt Steckler (woodwinds) Jared Sims (woodwinds) Terry Goss (woodwinds) Charlie Kohlhase (woodwinds) Dave Ambrosio (bass) Bill Carbone (drums)

Rattlemouth emerged from the ashes of Richmond’s legendary Orthotonics in 1989. Their sound has gradually morphed from their art-punk/art-rock roots towards a Ethio-Jazz powerhouse. They blaze through spirited instrumental updates of classic tunes from around the world (Mali, Ethiopia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Cuba, Jamaica, Lebanon, etc.), plus similarly flavored originals.

Alec’s songs are very dark and delivered with just the right parts of dread and humor and The Eyesores are a dream backing ensemble to anyone’s songs!

10 pm
Ergo
Brett Sroka (trombone, laptop) Shawn Baltazor (drums) Jason Moran (piano, rhodes electric piano)
Ergo is a trio using Rhodes electric piano and analog synth, drums and trombone and laptop. Their music is one of stark melodic beauty, enveloping electro-acoustic texture and empathic imagination. They have been playing together since 2003, combining the modern sound of electronica and beyond with jazz and ambient music. The basic building blocks of their sound are beats and electronics, trombone, the Fender Rhodes and drums. The music here generally develops slowly but it’s also very accessible while remaining something that holds active interest.

Forever Einstein
Kevin Gerety (bass), Charles O'Meara (guitar), John Roulat (drums)
Forever Einstein explores the possibilities of the simplest of rock line-ups; the guitar/bass/drums trio. They produce energized music that you can feel and think about by taking the power and aggression of rock and applying more adventurous compositional techniques than most rock music gets treated to. Einstein's CDs and immediately identifiable "power trio with smarts" sound has won them a broad range of acclaim. All three players are really superlative musicians, & there is a ton of great ideas percolating around here.

This instrumental power trio are equally influenced by the sound of early John McLaughlin/Tony Williams Lifetime, Meshuggah, the “downtown punk-jazz-harmolodic” school (James Blood Ulmer/Music Revelation Ensemble, Decoding Society, Curlew), Magma, Vijay Iyer and Ben Monder among others. This is not your father’s jazz band.

10 pm
Gutbucket
Ken Thompson (sax) Ty Citerman (guitar) Eric Rockwin (bass) Adam D. Gold (drums)
The twelve year-old Brooklyn-based quartet continuously push their composer-driven, art-rock-tainted chamber jazz into new terrain. The group attacks their jazz with the ferocity usually reserved for punk. Their music is filled with layers of mature arrangements and a full-throttle blend of energy, chops, melody, intricacy and noise.
