The “Cartologia Suite” having been sketched out over several years by composer Brian Groder is composed of six movements for jazz ensemble delving into the deeper meaning of maps present and past. Like music, mapmaking involves the use of symbols to represent external phenomena; through measurements and mathematical relationships, we model our world. The cartography theme of the project explores the challenges met by historical and contemporary modeling systems charting the new and unknown as individuals and societies faced profound changes in both social and mathematical orders. The LMCC, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, has awarded Brian Groder a Manhattan Community Art Fund grant in the support of Cartologia Suite’s music rehearsals and premier performance at The Stone.

Phillip Greenlief, Jon Raskin (saxes) Erik Friedlander (cello) Trevor Dunn (bass)
Since 2005, Phillip Greenlief and Jon Raskin (ROVA Saxophone Quartet) have presented a series of concerts on the west coast that feature the saxophonists with a pair of "like" instruments in a setting that allows for new directions in composition and improvisation. For this concert, their first 2+2 performance on the east coast, they will be joined by low-string instrument players Erik Friedlander (cello) and Trevor Dunn (contrabass). The concert will begin with the saxophonists in duo and continue with new compositions for the quartet by Greenlief and Raskin.

10 pm
Connie Crothers and Kevin Norton
Connie Crothers (piano) Kevin Norton (vibes, percussion)
Connie and Kevin’s musical interaction is almost telepathic: instead of a series of individual solos, their pieces are the epitome of musical democracy – a conversation of spontaneous improvisation, a continual shifting of foreground and background.
